In God of War Ragnarok, when Odin is down to roughly half his remaining health (in Phase 2 of the battle) he will randomly invoke one of two Elemental Shields to his health, similar to certain base enemies. Kratos must use the appropriate weapon to remove the shield before Odin’s health can be reduced further.
Oden’s Elemental Ice Shield
When Oden raises hand and you see a book materialize, dodge or back up quickly. Oden employs two (fire and ice) elemental shield variants. Until the ice shield is removed with Kratos’s Blades of Chaos (fire), Odin will be encircled in ice and cannot take further damage.
The initial appearance of Oden’s Elemental Shield carries a massive AoE blast that will inflict damage if you are caught too close.

Oden’s Elemental Fire Shield
Oden’s Elemental Fire Shield can only be destroyed when Kratos attacks him using the Leviathan Axe (ice).

More About Oden in God of War Ragnarok
Odin is the final boss encounter in the main story and proves to be a bigger challenge than his diminutive stature would suggest. He is a powerful god, the leader of a strong and prideful people, and perhaps more than anything else, a narcissistic madman. There may be harder bosses, but few can measure up to the awesome spectacle that is the final battle with Odin.
