The series’ return to 2D side-scrolling was announced with a colorful bang when Super Mario Bros. Wonder was revealed as the grand finale of the Nintendo Direct in June 2023. In terms of gameplay, the game signals a return to Mario’s roots, but it’s more connected to Mario’s past than you might expect.
A memorable moment came at the end of the announcement trailer, when everyone’s favorite plumber grabbed a never-before-seen item and transformed into an elephant, which made everyone remember the creative level design, expressive art style, and discovery of the game-changing Wonder Flowers. Despite returning to Super Mario Bros.’s 2D origins, Wonder is trying bold, new things unlike anything the franchise has ever attempted.
