During the weekend, right when Call of Duty was having a big moment with the Modern Warfare 3 beta, EA and DICE came up with some counterprogramming that ended up actually helping Battlefield.
A free weekend was held for Battlefield 2024, which is likely to be its last major update, as well as a steep 84% off sale to celebrate Season 6. It was certainly bold for Battlefield to schedule all that against its juggernaut competitor, and it paid off.
Whenever new content is released, Battlefield 2042, which has been averaging 10,000 concurrent players on Steam, tends to attract an even larger number of players. The numbers have reached 40 and 50,000 in previous seasons and free weekends, but none have made as much of a difference as the latest update and free weekend.
